PescArt Menorca welcomes the Port of Mahón
The PescArt Menorca upcycling initiative continues to grow and incorporates the collection of nets from Mahón, thanks to its Fishermen's Guild and the Port Authority
PescArt Menorca, the circular and blue economy project promoted by Menorca Preservation and catalyzed through the Menorca Without Plastic Alliance, announces the incorporation of the Port of Mahón to the initiative, thanks to the collaboration of its Fishermen's Guild and the support of the Authority Port of the Balearic Islands – Ports IB. This incorporation marks an important milestone, since, with it, the three main ports of the island join in the effort to recycle and give a second life to discarded fishing nets.
The integration of the Port of Mahón ensures to further expand the reach and impact of PescArt Menorca, not only in terms of the amount of nets collected and recycled, but also in the diversification and enrichment of artistic and artisanal creations. In 2024, the project is increasing sales points both on the island and outside it. At the same time, a program of workshops is being offered, both specific to artisans and artists and to different groups. Furthermore, in the coming months PescArt Menorca will schedule two exhibitions of the artistic and artisanal creations created through the project, and will consolidate new lines of collaboration and research. Finally, and new this year, the initiative is not limited to fishing nets, but other plastic waste with artistic potential is being incorporated, such as wetsuits or umbrellas.
Núria Sintes, coordinator of PescArt Menorca, points out that: “the addition of the Port of Mahón is further testimony to the power of the circular economy and community collaboration.” And he adds that: “PescArt Menorca is consolidated as an innovative project that not only seeks sustainable solutions to the problem of plastic pollution, but also promotes creativity, employment and social cohesion. From Menorca Preservation and the Plastic Free Menorca Alliance, we invite all interested parties to be part of this movement towards a more sustainable and creative future, whether by purchasing products, participating in workshops, donations or simply sharing our vision.
It is worth remembering that the Menorca Sin Plásticas Alliance – Plastic Free Menorca is a platform promoted by Menorca Preservation and made up of entities from Menorca with an important track record in the protection and preservation of the environment, such as the GOB Menorca, OBSAM-IME, the Leader Illa Association from Menorca and 0 Plastic Menorca. Through the Alliance, the entities join forces to work towards a Plastic-free Menorca.
